In August 2016, schoolchildren at the Hsutso Branch of Qiaotou Elementary School in Mailiao Township, which was located near FPG's Mailiao Industrial Complex, were relocated, which caused public concerns over the high concentration of thiodiglycolic acid (TdGA) in urine samples of students at the Hsutso Branch, and raised questions on whether this observation was connected with these schoolchildren's exposure to a vinyl chloride (VCM)-contaminated environment. The Ministry of Health and Welfare hired domestic and foregin experts, as well as EPA, to test urinary TdGA concentrations in these schoolchildren and the air environment. According to test results, not only was VCM not detected in the environment, but higher urinary TdGA concentrations were found in these schoolchildren after their relocation to Qiaotou Elementary School compared to the time when they were still studying at the Hsutso Branch. After a review and discussion session held by experts on February 7th, 2017, it was confirmed that no significant correlation had been found between urinary TdGA concentrations in these choolchildren and VCM concentration. These schoolchildren were then allowed to return to the Hsutso Branch in Seㄙptember 2017 to continue their studies (for more details, refer to Subsection 5.5.8 in FPC's 2016 CSR Report).
